In Canada and around the globe, our 12 member organizations work tirelessly to respond to global crises, offering hope and support to communities in their greatest moments of need. This year, the spirit of collaboration enabled transformative projects around the world.
In this blog post, we are excited to spotlight the incredible work of each of our members by highlighting one inspiring initiative they led this year with the support of the Humanitarian Coalition. These stories reflect the compassion, resilience, and determination that drive our collective mission.
Action Against Hunger Canada
In Lebanon, Action Against Hunger Canada and its partners are giving life-saving assistance to displaced communities by providing cash grants to 380 households, which allows them to purchase what they need most urgently, while also supporting local markets.
Action Against Hunger is also distributing relief items such as mattresses, blankets, and pillows to displaced people in the districts of Mount Lebanon Governorate.
Action Against Hunger Canada’s response in Lebanon is supported by the Government of Canada through the Humanitarian Coalition.
CARE Canada
In the aftermath of Cyclone Mocha, which devastated Myanmar's Rakhine State in May 2023, CARE Canada, supported by the Humanitarian Coalition and the Government of Canada, partnered with the women-led Phyu Sin Saytanar Action Group to bring vital aid to 3,925 households across 27 affected villages.
Through the distribution of shelter kits, hygiene supplies, water purifiers, and multi-purpose cash assistance, CARE Canada empowered families like Shwe Sin's to rebuild their lives on their own terms. Beyond providing aid, the project transformed local leaders like Shwe Sin, a 25-year-old volunteer who, after receiving training, became a vocal advocate and educator for her community. Canadian Foodgrains Bank
Following the devastating February 2023 earthquake in northern Syria, Basima and her family faced unimaginable hardship. Living in a damaged home, coping with reduced income, and struggling to meet their children's special dietary needs left the family in a state of fear and uncertainty.
With support from the Humanitarian Coalition and the Canadian government, the Canadian Foodgrains Bank, through the Mennonite Central Committee, stepped in to provide critical aid. Nutritious food, hygiene supplies, and essential items like diapers offered much-needed relief, enabling the family to regain stability and eat three meals a day after months of scarcity. Canadian Lutheran World Relief
In November 2024, intense rains in Colombia’s Chocó Department led to devastating floods and landslides, affecting more than 188,000 people and destroying homes, infrastructure, and crops. The disaster also heightened the risk of waterborne diseases and left communities with limited access to clean water.
With support from the Humanitarian Coalition and the Canadian government, Canadian Lutheran World Relief is providing critical assistance to approximately 30,000 people over six months. Read all about it here.
Doctors of the World Canada
Doctors of the World has been active in Lebanon since the 1990s, providing health and protection services with a strong focus on gender-sensitive healthcare and mental health and psycho-social support. In its current response to the humanitarian emergency in Lebanon, Doctors of the World, with the support of the Humanitarian Coalition and the Government of Canada, will improve access to primary health care services for both host communities and displaced people affected by the crisis, providing assistance to more than 4,200 people.
Humanity & Inclusion Canada
In Gaza, Humanity & Inclusion Canada supported the organization's global response, which included 313 awareness sessions about the explosive remnants of war, reaching 3,719 children and 457 adults across 15 shelters and other locations, including tents.
Humanity & Inclusion Canada also supported educational and recreational activities, which included 300 recreational activities in 160 shelters and camps for 57,000 people, most of whom were children and people with disabilities. Recreational activities might initially seem less critical, but they provide children with much-needed relief from the hardships of conflict.
Humanity & Inclusion Canada’s response in Gaza and the West Bank is supported by the Canadian government through the Humanitarian Coalition.
Islamic Relief Canada
In May 2024, devastating flash floods struck northeastern Afghanistan, displacing more than 5,000 families and destroying homes, infrastructure, crops, and livestock. Vulnerable populations in provinces like Baghlan and Takhar faced critical shortages of safe housing, clean water, and other essentials.
With support from the Humanitarian Coalition and the Canadian government, Islamic Relief Canada provided life-saving aid to 8,050 flood-affected individuals. Efforts include cash-for-shelter programs to repair homes, cash-for-work opportunities to empower local workers, and the distribution of hygiene kits to 1,750 individuals.
Building on 31 years of experience in Afghanistan, Islamic Relief’s response not only addresses immediate needs but also fosters long-term recovery and resilience for affected communities.
Oxfam Canada
In October 2024, Severe Tropical Storm Trami, known locally as Kristine, ravaged the Philippines, displacing 685,000 people and claiming 125 lives. Millions of people faced devastating losses, with many seeking refuge in overcrowded evacuation centres or makeshift shelters, lacking access to food, clean water, and hygiene supplies.
With the support of the Humanitarian Coalition and the Canadian government, Oxfam Canada and its partner Coastal Core are delivering vital aid to 17,650 individuals. Their response includes emergency water and sanitation services, protection initiatives focusing on urgent sexual and reproductive health care, and multi-purpose cash assistance for 1,500 vulnerable families. Oxfam-Québec
From August 30 to September 6, 2024, unprecedented rainfall struck Niger's center-south regions, affecting more than 370,000 people and leaving widespread destruction in its wake. The floods claimed 69 lives, destroyed crops, and severely damaged water and hygiene infrastructure in more than 2,100 localities.

Plan International Canada
When a devastating earthquake struck western Nepal, Purne and his wife Lila, both living with disabilities, managed to escape their crumbling home. With no resources to rebuild, they faced the harsh winter in a makeshift tent.
Thanks to Plan International Canada, supported by the Government of Canada, they received immediate relief--warm clothes, kitchen supplies, and shelter materials. Within weeks they moved into a safe, temporary home.
"The shelter brings hope for a more stable future," Purne says.

Save the Children Canada
In September 2024, heavy rains caused the Alau Dam in Nigeria to overflow, flooding parts of Maiduguri and displacing approximately 400,000 people. The floods left 37 people dead and worsened the ongoing crisis in northeastern Nigeria.
Save the Children Canada, through its local partner, is providing critical aid to 15,000 people, offering cash assistance, psychosocial support, and mobile health services. They are also working to prevent gender-based violence and help families meet their essential needs with dignity. This emergency response is supported by the Government of Canada through the Canadian Humanitarian Assistance Fund.

World Vision Canada
In November 2023, devastating El Niño-induced floods in southern and eastern Ethiopia, particularly the Somali Region, affected 1.5 million people, displacing more than 632,700 and causing significant loss of lives, livelihoods, and infrastructure.
In the first months of 2024, World Vision Canada, with the support of the Humanitarian Coalition and the Government of Canada, provided critical humanitarian assistance, including distributing essential medicines and medical supplies to five health facilities, rehabilitating damaged water systems to restore safe drinking water for 923 households, and raising public awareness about cholera, malaria, and other infectious diseases to prevent outbreaks.
