Of earthquakes and teddy bears
Her teddy bear--that's one thing Hoda, 11, misses most after the devastating earthquake that destroyed her family's home in northern Syria.
The earthquake, which struck Syria and Turkey on February 6, killed at least 56,000 people in the two countries, destroying or damaging over 300,000 buildings. Hundreds of thousands of people were left homeless, including Hoda and her family.
Hoda is thankful her family escaped the collapse of their home; she clutched her sister's hand tight as they ran from the building. Later, they stood in the freezing rain and watched the building collapse, burying all their belongings inside--including her teddy bear.
Today Hoda and her family live in camp for earthquake survivors, where they have received a tent, clothes, food and emergency supplies from Shafaq, a partner of The Humanitarian Coalition's member Save the Children.
Along with the essential items, Hoda is also attending the Child Safe Space in the camp where she has access to activities and psychosocial support--although nothing will make up for the loss of her teddy bear.
