Mozambique, on the southeastern coast of Africa may seem far away, but when a cyclone struck in mid-February, aid from Canada was quickly made available.
Cyclone Dineo brought heavy rain, a storm surge and winds of reaching 130 km/h, killing 9 people and affecting close to 700,000 people.
The storm caused extensive damage to the region’s food supply, destroying close to 30,000 hectares of agricultural land. More than 60,000 homes, 70 health clinics and close to 2,000 classrooms were also damaged. Lack of access to portable water remains a key concern, while health centers are not functional due to the lack of roofing and partial destructions.
However, thanks to $200,000 from the Canadian Humanitarian Assistance Fund (CHAF), CARE was able to provide survivors with hygiene materials and help rehabilitate health facilities in the affected communities within days of the disaster.
CARE has significant experience responding to humanitarian disasters within the Mozambique context. In the affected region in particular, CARE has been implementing development and emergency response activities for over 20 years.
The CHAF is a joint mechanism financed by Global Affairs Canada, the Humanitarian Coalition and its member agencies.
