Humanitarian Needs

Hurricane Oscar hit Guantánamo Province on October 20, 2024, in the midst of a four-day national electrical blackout. The storm brought heavy rainfall of more than 600mm in some areas, which resulted in flooding, widespread damage to houses and infrastructure, and the evacuation of 120,000 people.

Humanitarian Response

CARE has been operating in Cuba for 35 years and is one of the few international NGOs with a presence in the country, implementing humanitarian projects in different regions across the country.

CARE Canada and its local partner, the Council of Churches in Cuba (CIC), will provide gender-sensitive water and sanitation kits, along with critical relief items such as mattresses, mosquito nets, and chargeable lamps, to approximately 20,000 of the most vulnerable crisis-affected people over a period of up to six months in order to address the humanitarian needs arising as a result of the hurricane in Cuba.

In addition, CARE Canada and its partners will organize educational talks in communities on gender-based violence awareness, benefiting 500 people.
