Humanitarian Needs
Tropical storm Eta, followed by Iota, affected more than 4.3 million people, with 88 casualties and 41 missing. In the area of Valle de Sula, there has been widespread damage to roads, bridges, houses, and power lines, leaving people cut off from assistance and with urgent shelter, household items, food, water and sanitation needs.
There are close to 150,000 people with urgent humanitarian needs living in desperate conditions and overcrowding in shelters, exposed to infection including COVID-19, and unable to return to their homes. Others are trying to return to their homes which may be damaged or destroyed.
Humanitarian Response
World Vision will identify the most vulnerable families in shelters in the Valle de Sula region, and provide them with hygiene materials (personal cleaning items and facemasks for prevention of COVID-19) as well as a mattress and blankets. Two kits with cleaning materials to protect families from COVID-19 will also be provided to every shelter.
In order to ensure that female-headed households are able to meet their immediate needs for emergency supplies, World Vision will distribute cash vouchers to affected families.
