Humanitarian Needs

Myanmar has been facing devastating impacts from the remnants of Typhoon Yagi, with dozens of townships across many states and regions flooded, resulting in alarmingly high casualties, damages, and displacements. Nay Pyi Taw, Bago, Kayah, Kayin, Magway, Mandalay, Mon, and eastern and southern Shan are particularly affected. According to the UN, an estimated 631,000 people across the country have been affected.

Across Myanmar, more than 400 people have reportedly died, and more than a thousand are missing, although there are challenges in verifying the numbers. The death toll may rise dramatically over the next few weeks as information is still being gathered amidst access challenges due to the floods.

Overflowing rivers, landslides and flooding have devastated villages across Myanmar, with more than 630,000 people affected. The northwest region has been heavily affected with an estimated 200,000 people evacuated across Magway, Mandalay and Sagaing regions.

The destruction of farms and gardens —the primary sources of income for many communities— means that many people are struggling to access food. Access to clean water and water and sanitation facilities is also constrained, and the risks for gender-based violence have intensified due to insecure shelters and inadequate lighting in displacement areas.

Humanitarian Response

Save the Children's response will focus on providing families with emergency supplies like hygiene and household kits, emergency latrine and first aid kits and items to build temporary shelters. Save the Children will also support families to access safe drinking water through the distribution of water purification tablets and supplying cash transfers for families to buy food.
