Humanitarian Needs
In Mali, severe flooding caused by heavy rains in mid-July 2024 displaced thousands of people and caused widespread damage. By September 16, at least 62 people had died, 118 had been injured, and nearly 180,000 were affected across 19 regions.
The humanitarian situation is critical, with thousands of people displaced. Furthermore, more than 5,700 hectares of fields have been destroyed, 2,745 water points damaged, 5,780 latrines destroyed, 25 schools damaged or collapsed, and 93 others occupied by disaster victims.
Humanitarian Response
Plan International Canada and its local partners are providing multi-purpose cash assistance to meet the immediate needs of 2,232 flood-affected households and provide non-food items and dignity kits in the city of Ségou and surrounding communities in need of assistance. Humanitarian Coalition member Plan International Canada will also provide affected communities with safe drinking water and hygiene and sanitation services in the regions of Bamako, Gao, Mopti, and Ségou.
Awareness campaigns will also be conducted to sensitize the community on hygiene promotion, particularly the importance of observing hygiene measures to prevent water-borne diseases.
Our response to small and medium-scale disasters is co-funded by Global Affairs Canada, the member agency delivering the assistance, and donations to the Humanitarian Coalition. Your gift will help us be ready for the next disaster. Donate today.
