Humanitarian Needs

Prolonged and intense rains in the Department of  Chocó, located on the western coast of Colombia, during November 2024 caused rivers to overflow, resulting in flooding and landslides that affected more than 188,000 people. The flooding destroyed homes and infrastructure, devastated food crops, increased the risk of water- and vector-borne diseases, and contaminated water sources.

Humanitarian Response

Canadian Lutheran World Relief will provide immediate assistance to approximately 30,000 people for up to six months in response to the flooding. Additionally, Canadian Lutheran World Relief and its partners will focus on providing emergency shelter items, water, sanitation and hygiene services and kits, as well as multi-purpose cash assistance. Awareness sessions on hygiene practices and the proper use of water for consumption will also be conducted in affected communities.
