On May 24, 2024, a massive landslide near Yambali village in the highlands of Papua New Guinea has buried more than 2,000 people, according to the country's government.
Houses were buried under earth, reaching 8 metres in depth.  Due to the early hours that the landslide occurred, most people were asleep, which explains the high fatality count.

There has been widespread infrastructure damage in all of Yambali ward. An estimated 200 square kilometers has been affected, including 200 meters of the main access road between the provincial capital of Wabag and the affected area.
The humanitarian needs are for water, emergency medical assistance, food, shelter, hygiene and household items.  Protection is a critical

Humanitarian Response

CARE has been active in PNG since 1989, with five offices nationwide, including two in the highlands. Its staff, predominantly PNG nationals, possess expertise in humanitarian aid, gender issues, and healthcare.
CARE Canada, in partnership with women-led civil-society organizations, will work on increasing access to water, sanitation and hygiene supplies and information for landslide -affected households in Yambeli Ward. As such, CARE will provide essential supplies such as jerry cans, buckets, 200 litre water barrels, soap and sanitary pads. Care will also conduct hygiene promotion campaigns to educate households on the importance of handwashing, safe water storage, and sanitation practices to prevent disease outbreaks.

CARE Canada will also conduct rapid assessments to identify specific protection needs of affected individuals, including women, children, elderly, and persons with disabilities.  Following the assessment, CARE and local partners will disseminate key messages, information and materials on available protection services, rights, and safety of the most vulnerable communities to 5,000 people.
