“El Niño” Induced Flood, Somalia
People Helped
Humanitarian Needs
Intense rainfall, fueled by the El Niño weather pattern, caused extensive flooding throughout the Horn of Africa in October, causing massive floods that wreaked havoc on infrastructure, destroyed homes, hospitals, schools, and roads. Crops have been inundated, and livestock have perished. A total of two million people are affected.
Humanitarian Response
World Vision has been in Somalia since 1993, at the forefront of emergency response, establishing operations in difficult-to-access locations and reaching those most in need.
Oxfam has been providing support to people in that country affected by droughts, epidemics, and conflict in Somalia for decades. It has offices in key regional states and over 50 staff with different capacities and has invested significant resources in partner capacity building.
Through their projects, affected populations will have increased access to clean and safe water supply; increased access to improved sanitation and hygiene; improved access to mobile health clinics, supplies and treatments for communicable diseases, along with disease prevention; increased access to nutrition treatments and services; and cash for flood-affected households.
Our response to small and medium-scale disasters is co-funded by Global Affairs Canada, the member agency delivering the assistance, and donations to the Humanitarian Coalition. Your gift will help us be ready for the next disaster. Donate today.
