Cyclone Eloise, Mozambique

Humanitarian Needs
Tropical Cyclone Eloise made landfall in Sofala Province, Mozambique on January 23, 2021, destroying homes, schools, health centres and crops. Hundreds of water sources were damaged. Some 36,000 people were displaced and moved to 36 temporary accommodation sites.
Lack of access to clean water and sanitation facilities, especially in resettlement camps, poses a risk of transmission of waterborne diseases as well as a safety risk for vulnerable communities, including women and girls, the elderly, and people with disabilities.
Humanitarian Response
Oxfam Canada is responding to this crisis by focusing primarily on water and sanitation for people in temporary resettlement camps, while ensuring the safety of vulnerable populations, especially women and girls.
Oxfam is installing a water supply system in each of four camps. Each system will consist of a bore hole, an elevated 10,000-litre tank, a pump and taps. Water management committees will be formed and trained, and water quality will be monitored.
Oxfam will also identify and train safeguarding focal points in all camps in the project, establish appropriate complaint and feedback mechanisms and provide training on gender-safe programming.
Our response to small and medium-scale disasters is co-funded by Global Affairs Canada, the member agency delivering the assistance, and donations to the Humanitarian Coalition. Your gift will help us be ready for the next disaster. Donate today.
