Codes and Standards

Each member agency of the Humanitarian Coalition strives to provide accountability, transparency, and collaboration to serve those in need most effectively and to improve their operations. As such, they have committed to uphold a number of codes of conduct and international standards. In addition, the Humanitarian Coalition is accredited under Imagine Canada’s national Standards Program and the Better Business Bureau.

The Code of Conduct for the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in Disaster Relief

This code of conduct outlines 10 principle commitments that NGOs should adhere to in disaster response work, while maintaining high standards, independence, and effectiveness of impact.

Core Humanitarian Standard

The CHS sets out Nine Commitments that organisations and individuals involved in humanitarian response can use to improve the quality and effectiveness of the assistance they provide. The CHS places communities and people affected by crisis at the centre of humanitarian action.

Humanitarian Charter and Minimum Standards in Humanitarian Response

The Sphere Project’s charter aims to improve the quality of assistance to people affected by disaster and improve the accountability of states and humanitarian agencies to their constituents, donors, and the affected populations. Sphere provides three things: a handbook a broad process of collaboration, and an expression of commitment to quality and accountability.
