CARE Canada provides aid to flood affected residents in Bangladesh

Thanks to the Canadian Humanitarian Assistance Fund, Humanitarian Coalition member CARE Canada is assisting impacted individuals and communities with timely emergency relief aid following heavy rains and flooding in Bangladesh.

Monsoon-induced flooding throughout most of July and August has affected more than 3 million people in Bangladesh. More than 40 people have died and thousands have sought refuge in flood shelters. Approximately 250,000 homes have been destroyed or damaged, and residents are in need of food, water and emergency shelter. Forecasts predict the situation will continue to worsen in a number of regions.

With $333,333 allocated from the Fund, CARE Canada’s response will provide assistance to 10,000 people affected. The aid provided includes shelter items such as blankets, tarps, cooking utensils as well as cash transfers so families can have improved access to food, health related needs.

CARE has been working in Bangladesh, in particular the affected areas, for more than 40 years and has developed strong relationships with local NGO partners.

The Canadian Humanitarian Assistance Fund is a joint mechanism primarily financed by Global Affairs Canada with by the Humanitarian Coalition and its member agencies.
