More than ten million people were affected by Typhoon Haiyan - known locally as Yolanda. In the worst hit coastal city of Tacloban, some estimates suggest that more than 5,000 people have died from a population of 200,000.

The authorities in the Philippines pre-emptively evacuated nearly 790,000 people and had pre-positioned food packages for nearly 500,000 people. But with millions of people living in the path of the typhoon, many needed immediate assistance with drinking water, food, emergency shelters, and medicines. The devastation was especially widespread in Metro Cebu, the country's second largest city with a population of 2.5 million people.

The member agencies of the Humanitarian Coalition were on the ground in the Philippines and responded with emergency assistance in several areas. Please read below for more detailed information on their response efforts.

Our Member Agencies' Response

CARE Canada's Response to Typhoon Haiyan

CARE`s response was focused in the Leyte and Cebu regions of the the Philippines, working closely with their partner, ACCORD. Together, CARE and ACCORD reached 200,000 affected by Typhoon Haiyan responding to the most urgent needs for food, shelter and hygiene kits. Prior to the Typhoon's arrival, CARE and ACCORD had evacuated people in the region.

With funding provided by the Humanitarian Coalition, CARE provided emergency shelter kits to families who chose to remain in their damaged homes, as this represents most people affected by the disaster.

CARE's response targeted 1,200 households in the Leyte region prioritizing the most vulnerable. CARE reached 6,000 individuals, including 3,600 children, female-headed households, the disabled, the elderly and those households who displayed a higher level of damage;
The emergency shelter kits provided by CARE included items such as sheeting to repair roofs, nails, sealer, as well as wood framing and basic tools;
In addition, CARE provide cash transfers to those vulnerable populations to hire ouside assistance for household repairs.

Oxfam's Response to Typhoon Haiyan

Oxfam was on the ground responding to the impacts of Typhoon Haiyan with local partners and working to provide 250,000 people with clean water, sanitation, safe hygiene practices and cash to compensate for loss of income and for access to food and basic essentials:

Oxfam reached more than 20,000 people with emergency relief and more than 8,600 people with hygiene and water kits in Tacloban, Palo, Tanauan and Bantayan island.
Work also progressed in three areas of Cebu to clear debris, like fallen trees, with chainsaws.

With funding provided by the Humanitarian Coalition, Oxfam supported the following intiatives:

Distributing food or cash grants to 20,000 households in order to satisfy their food needs.
Providing food or cash for work such as debris clearing.
Providing assets like fishing nets, tools and seeds etc.
Support to traders to recapitalize their stock, and cash grants to community groups to ensure local markets have support necessary to recover from Typhoon Haiyan
Ensuring households have access to safe water and sanitation facilities through installation of water treatment units in camps and communities, provision of water and sanitiation kits, construction of washing and bathing facilities
Distribution of resources to aid in repairing damaged houses

Plan Canada's Response to Typhoon Haiyan

Plan’s emergency teams were on the ground and responding to the needs of affected children and families. Getting food, clean drinking water, medical supplies and shelter to children and families were Plan’s immediate priorities, and the agency distributed emergency shelter kits, water cans, and purification supplies to affected populations. Other areas supported by Plan included: food, education, health, and child protection.

Plan also made use of local partnerships to ensure that the response to Typhoon Haiyan was managed in an efficient manner that reached the most vulnerable households and individuals affected.

With funding provided by the Humanitarian Coalition, Plan provided support for the following activities.

Distribution of water purification kits to provide immediate and safe drinking water to affected populations;
Distribution of hygiene kits to maintain the health and dignity of affected populations;
Distribution of temporary shelter kits to provide shelter to households and families in need;
The above projects are intended to reach more than 57,500 individuals affected by Typhoon Haiyan;

Save the Children's Response to Typhoon Haiyan

Save the Children's presence in the Philippines allowed them to deploy a rapid emergency response team before Haiyan's arrival. Since the typhoon, Save the Children has provided clean water, food, shelter, and medicine to affected populations. Save the Children are specifically focused on ensuring that the unique needs of children are met including shelter, protection, access to nutritious food, clean drinking water, shelter and a safe space to play.

The agency's presence in the Philippines since Typhoon Haiyan has also addressed the need for delivery of primary health care services. Some of the health concerns identified by Save the Children, WHO and other international health organizations include: wounds caused by the storm, lack of hygiene facilities, water borne-illnesses, problems with pregnancy and childbrith, STDs, respiratory infections, malnutrition.

Funding provided by the Humanitarian Coalition supported the following initiatives:

Providing outreach activities to provide basic primary healthcare services to hard to reach communities;
Ensuring sexual health information is available to high-risk adolescents;
Support the Department of Health and WHO in disease surveillance and early warning systems and respond to any outbreaks in a timely manner;
Assist in routine immunizations with a focus on tetanus and measles;
Clearance of debris and repairs to one hospital to ensure it can provide health services to surrounding populations.

One year later, Save the Children Canada's CEO, Patricia Erb, reflects on her travels to the affected region and the power of resilience and determination. Save the Children also put together a selection of photos demonstrating the vast imporvements in the region along with a video to thank the numerous donors who helped make their response possible.
