Second Earthquake Hits Nepal

Last night, a second major earthquake in less than three weeks struck Nepal. The 7.3 magnitude quake hit close to Mount Everest and the border with Tibet. While the full extent of the damage is not yet clear, the member agencies of the Humanitarian Coalition are already adapting their existing responses to the April 25th quake. With a combined presence of more than 300 staff in Nepal, assessment teams have been deployed to affected areas.

Initial information suggests that most buildings that withstood the April 25th quake have also survived this one, but that many which were previously severely damaged have collapsed. Human lives are the paramount consideration at this stage with reports of injuries continuing to climb.

Our member agencies remain on the ground providing a wide range of emergency items and services, such as shelters, blankets, clean water and sanitation supplies, water storage units, food, medical aid, baby kits, and other essentials. Because children and pregnant women are particularly vulnerable in the aftermath of natural disasters, special attention is given to their nutrition needs and to protection measures.
