Tropical Cyclone Fani made landfall on May 3 in the Odisha region of India, sweeping through thousands of villages and across vast swaths of agricultural land, destroying homes, infrastructure and livelihoods. It is estimated that more than 15 million people from 16,000 villages were affected. The Humanitarian Coalition, working through member agency Islamic Relief and supported by the government of Canada, is in India providing urgent humanitarian assistance to survivors.

The Humanitarian Coalition and its member agencies welcome the Government of Canada’s decision to match donations by Canadians in response to the devastation caused by Cyclone Idai in Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe. The Honourable Maryam Monsef, Minister of International Development, announced today that individual donations to the Humanitarian Coalition and its 10 members will be matched from March 15 to April 14, to a maximum of $2 million.

The Humanitarian Coalition has received funding from the Government of Canada to support the life-saving work of two member agencies in Malawi. CARE Canada and Plan International Canada are on the ground responding to the needs of people displaced by flooding.
