Japan Earthquake and Tsunami

On Friday March 11, 2011, an 8.9 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami hit the North-East coast of Japan. This devastating disaster swept away thousands of homes, forced over 200,000 evacuees into shelters and claimed over 10,000 lives and many more unaccounted for.

ASIA PACIFIC DISASTERS

The devastating week began with floods in the Philippines, caused by a tropical storm that later strengthened to a typhoon as it hit Vietnam. An earthquake then triggered a tsunami in the small island nation of Samoa, washing away homes and businesses. A day later, a powerful earthquake and its aftershocks collapsed numerous buildings on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Another typhoon is gathering strength off the coast of the Philippines and is expected to make landfall soon.

As the world approaches the 25th anniversary of the 1984 East African famine, Canada’s leading aid agencies are warning of a new crisis looming in East Africa. A perfect storm of crop failures, a multi-year lack of rain, the effects of climate change, conflicts and political turmoil threaten some 20 million people with severe hunger in East Africa.

Myanmar - Cyclone Nargis

Cyclone Nargis struck the southwest coast of Myanmar (Burma) on Saturday, May 3, 2008 with wind gusts up to 240 kph. Current estimates are that over 1.5 million people have been severely affected by this disaster, with as many as 100,000 feared dead and more than one million people homeless. Communication lines have been badly damaged and roads travel is difficult. The needs are great, and Canadians donated generously to support the relief efforts.

Crisis In Kenya

More than half a million people have been displaced by instability in Kenya. The violence that has been reported has been caused by a small minority of people in the Eastern African country: those affected by the instability are innocent families who have seen their homes destroyed and their businesses lost.

Floods in Southern Africa

Hundreds of thousands of people have been affected by massive flooding that has extended across much of Southern Africa since December 2007. The rains came early this year and have been much stronger than usual. In large areas across the entire region, crops were not planted and hunger will continue to spread long after the floodwaters have receded.

Conflict in the Middle East in the summer of 2006 forced approximately 600,000 people in Lebanon to flee their homes due to violence. Houses, roads and essential services were destroyed; hundreds of thousands of people faced food shortages, homelessness and danger.
